Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and produces small, red, pus-filled pustules. And that stinks! Seriously, it can be super annoying, and it can be really hard to get rid of. It is often confused for other facial conditions, like regular old acne. However, if you don’t treat it, it can get worse.
Even though we can put a man on the moon, scientists don’t know the exact causes of this sore. Some think it’s caused by abnormalities in facial blood vessels, that contribute to flushing, persistent redness, and visible blood vessels.
Genetics and skin color also seem to have a factor in the development of Rosacea. Nearly 14 million Americans are affected by Rosacea.
So, before we get into these products, we want to be clear: there is currently no cure for this pain-in-the-butt condition. However, there are lots of best moisturizers for rosacea that can help relieve symptoms.
FAQs
Is rosacea contagious? Nope. So don’t worry! There is no evidence that spots can be transmitted between people, even if you’re rubbing your face on there face (why would you do that?).
Is spots hereditary? Although there are no scientific studies proving whether spots is hereditary, there is some strong evidence that points to inheritance as the cause, since most people who have Rosacea could also have relatives who also have Rosacea (or some other skin condition, like blackheads or acne).
How long does spots last? It is a chronic condition not a short-term one. This means that it will probably go away and come back. But don’t stress!
Even though it can’t be totally cured, you can drastically reduce your spots with medication and lifestyle changes. As always, if it’s really bugging you, we recommend you see a specialist.
Will spots change with age? Sometimes yes; sometimes no. Generally, if you don’t treat it, it gets a bit worse as you get older — especially if you don’t make any lifestyle changes (e.g. eating well).
Pevonia RS2 Gentle Care Cream
Pevonia RS2 Gentle Care Cream will run you about $71.00. The product is composed of green tea that promotes healing and is an anti-irritant, licorice that decongests, chamomile to help calm, Vitamin E for healing, Allantoin for desensitizing and a variation of other ingredients. It is specially formulated to heal sensitive skin and treat the symptoms.
After thoroughly cleansing and toning, you apply this cream in the morning and evening all over face and neck. For best results, use with another Pevonia product RS2 Concentrate.
Pevonia RS2 Gentle Care Cream shines during breakouts; it’s one of our favorite moisturizers for actually calming your face down. It helps with the redness, burning, and itching of flare-ups. Some poeple think this cream is heavy, but we thought it was just fine.
Dermalogica Ultra Calming Barrier Repair
UltraCalming- Barrier Repair by Dermalogica works for not only on spots but also for environmentally sensitized skin. It’s anti-Ozonate complex shields skin from environmental stress. UltraCalming- Barrier Repair helps to prevent a future assault with its primrose oil and silicones.
You can incorporate it into both your daytime and nighttime routine. This product is effecitve and everything, but the best part is how light and smooth it is; it’s almost as if you’re not wearing anything. However, its not quite as good at treating redness as other products.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Soothing Protective Skincare Lotion
This is one of our favorite products — mostly for its ability to moisturize your skin without being greasy (ugh — we hate greasy lotions). Because of its lightness, you can use it under another moisturizer or make-up.
This moisturizer isn’t designed to treat breakouts, but it’s super light and very easy to wear. So, while it’s probably not the most potent moisturizer on those mornings when you wake up to find your spots actin’ a fool, it’s an absolutely fantastic moisturizer for daily prevention.
For the same reason, La Roche lotion should probably be our first choice if you’ve already gotten your spots under control with serious lifestyle changes, like nutrition and exercise. This could give you that extra little bit of confidence you need to kick your day’s butt!
Phytomer Velvety Soothing Cream
Dourceur Marine Velvety Soothing Cream by Phytomer is designed for Rosacea, irritated, or sensitive skin — so it’s a good Jack of all trades-type cream.
Its marine-based active ingredients strengthen the skin’s natural defenses against environmental aggressors. It claims to instantly reduce the redness caused by their flare-ups. It’s goingto run you about $80.
We found that this cream moisturizes without leaving too much greasy residue behind. It has a good consistency for nighttime use but a little too heavy for daytime use. Concerning Rosacea, it does help with easing flare-ups, which is what we’re all here for, right?!
Avene Antirougeurs FORT Relief Concentrate
Priced at $46.00, Avene Antirougeurs FORT Relief Concentrate may give you the best bang for your buck. Its unique use of Ruscus extract treats sore by increasing circulation in order to improve the appearance of blood vessels.
Other ingredients such as Thermal spring water and Shea butter also help the appearance of skin. The Shea butter softens the skin and protects from moisture loss while Avene’s thermal spring water soothes irritation and calms heat sensitivity.
Avene Antirougeurs FORT Relief Concentrate is the Allure Best of Beauty 2013 Winner for Best of Sensitive Skin.
Just remember: Avene Antirougeurs FORT Relief Concentrate is not a stand-alone cream; it should be used coupled with another moisturizer. It’s also pretty heavy, so we recommended it mostly for nighttime use.
Murad Correcting Moisturizer with SPF 15
Murad Correcting Moisturizer is one of the only moisturizers on this list that also contains sun protection of SPF 15. And that’s awesome!
For whatever reason, moisturizers that also product from UV rays are hard to find. And it’s even more difficult to find moisturizers with an SPF that also treat this sore.
But this product does it, and it’s one of the only ones. It contains peppermint leaf extract in order to relieve discomfort and stinging.
Licorice Extract helps reduce surface redness and Goji Bean extract reduces inflamed skin and free radical damage. Plus, if you’re an environmentalist, you’ll be happy to know this product was not tested on animals.
